Bob H. Smith is a very kind and caring person who was diagnosed with a spinal cord tumor 3 years ago.

The surgery left him paralyzed from the ribcage down. Bob is now bed-ridden at a long term care facility in Brick, NJ. Bobs constant medical needs prohibit him from ever living on his own again.

Medicare has denied Bob H. Smith his wheelchair that he so desperately needs to live some resemblance of a normal life with his disability.

This benefit will try to raise enough money to get Bob H. Smith the wheelchair and to try to give him hope and some positivity in his life.

Bob Smith is one of the founders of the Pony's Hippy Army promotions group. Bob was always the guy who got you to a show and made sure you had a good time. A difficult back surgery has left Bob unable to walk. This benefit is specifically to purchase Bob a state of the art wheelchair so he can once again join us at the shows. Are SEOs the 'Bad Guys'?

There have been a couple of pretty interesting articles written this week that ask a legitimate (if not somewhat sensationalized) question: Does Google consider SEOs to be criminals?

SEOs being SEOs are, by definition, people who make a living trying to manipulate the results of search engines. Now, before you eat me alive here... I don't necessarily mean manipulate in a negative sense. But in many aspects 'optimization' and 'manipulation' are somewhat interchangeable terms. An SEO 'optimizes' a site in an attempt to enhance that site's search engine rank or placement. By moving a site in the results, you are, by definition, manipulating the results.

There is nothing wrong with that. There are lots of sites that aren't 'search engine friendly' and lots of sites that just do things 'wrong' that, when fixed, will notice an enhancement in their positioning for search queries relevant to their site. Search engines don't mind this. The existence of resources like Webmaster Central are a testament to this.

Submitting your website multiple times has no effect on your position in the search engines, nor does it effect the frequency with which the search engines will visit your website. This may not be true for minor search engines, but for the crawlers that power the major search engines discussed below, you only need to submit ONE time.

What Search Engines and/or Directories Should I Submit My Website To?
The first question should really be, what are the major Search Engines and Directories? The top 5 search engines often comprise more than 95% of all traffic your website will receive from search engines. Below is a comprehensive list of the major players in the search engine scene.

Major Search Engines To Submit To-

Google (http://www.google.com)- Often called the greatest search engine on the Internet, it is also the most popular according to recent Nielson/NetRaitings polls. This search engine is entirely free for the primary listings, and offers paid listings at the top of the search results, as well as their AdWords program which shows small text banners on the right hand side of the search results. Google bases its search results on website content as well as their patented PageRank algorithm which factors in links from other websites to determining your rank in the search results. Submit to this website at http://www.google.com/addurl.html and your website should be in the index within a month, sometimes two.

Yahoo! (http://www.yahoo.com) - Second most popular, and probably the most famous of all search engines, this icon among web portals controls the search results on MSN.com, AltaVista.com, and Alltheweb.com in addition to its own search results. Submission is free, and I wouldn't recommend paying for inclusion in this directory at this time, though paying to be in the directory is a good idea if you can afford the $300/year. To submit your website to the search engine go here: http://submit.search.yahoo.com/free/request

MSN.com (http://www.msn.com) - The third most popular search engine, MSN, does not currently provide its own search results. The results found on MSN are actually provided by Yahoo!, and you can be listed in MSN by submitting through Yahoo! at the link above. MSN does plan to offer their own search results in the future, and I believe that they are using the old Inktomi index as their starting point so you might want to submit here: http://free.submit-it.com/msnsubmit.htm

AOL (http://www.aol.com) - This popular search engine uses Google search results as its primary and paid listings. See Google.

AllTheWeb (http://www.alltheweb.com) - Purchased by Yahoo!, this once promising search engine now uses Yahoo! results and will probably be used as a side project by Yahoo! for various purposes.

AltaVista (http://www.altavista.com) - One of the oldest search engines on the Internet, AltaVista was showing its age until Yahoo! purchased it in 2004. It now uses Yahoo! results and is basically just another portal for Yahoo!.

AskJeeves / Teoma.com (http://www.ask.com and http://www.Teoma.com) - The Teoma index powers both the popular Ask.com website and its sister site Teoma.com. You can only get into this index through being found by the Teoma Crawler, or via paid Inclusion which you can order through http://www.positiontech.com/askjeeves/index.htm

The above are the main search engines on the web which you can submit your website to, if you know a website that is not on the above list, chances are it is using search results from one of the above search engines or indexes.
Major Internet Directories -

DMOZ.org (The Open Directory Project) - owned by AOL, and operated by a team of volunteers, the Open Directory Project or ODP is the largest FREE active Internet Directory. This is THE place to be for a website on the Internet. It is the definitive directory, and is referenced by all of the major search engines. The only problem is that there are 3 million websites in the directory, and more than a million in the que waiting to get in. Getting into this directory can take 3 - 6 months, and that's if you qualify. Make sure to read their guidelines for creating a Title and Description before submitting, and make sure you are submitting to the most relevant directory.

Yahoo! Directory - at $300/Year this directory carries a heavy price, but may still be worth your while. If you can fit it into your advertising budget I would recommend it, but usually only if you really have an extra $300 per year lying around. The benefit of this directory may increase as time goes on, but as of right now, this is probably not worth your time or money.

LookSmart Directory - This is actually a Cost Per Click service that looks like a directory. You'll pay $0.15 per click and you aren't guaranteed a position or click volume. If done correctly this directory might do well for your website since it does provide the main results for the third largest search engine on the Internet (MSN.com), but this is strictly a budget and judgment call as you can get similar results for free from Inktomi.

-Other Good Free Directories With a Catch-

Gimpsy.com - Free directory with some weird requirements. The index tries to use "real language searches", for example "Compare Insurance Rates" would be a directory structure Compare >> Insurance Rates , Insurance Rates being the subcategory. A little tricky but worth submitting to.

GoGuides.org - A great free directory, the only catch is that they want you to become an editor. Which basically means that before you can submit a URL you will need to fill out an application. The bonus is that once you are accepted your link goes online immediately.

JoeAnt.com - Same deal as GoGuides.org. If you have the time to apply to become an editor, then you can list your site. Worth your time in my opinion, but its up to you.

Zeal.com - Great directory, which will get you into the LookSmart directory for FREE! The catch is that your website has to be strictly informational and non-profit. Some exceptions are made, but in order to get in you will either need to know an editor and ask them to submit for you, or become and editor yourself like with GoGuides and JoeAnt, however I hear the application process is more difficult.

Ok, lets say your not into the whole blogging idea, it is time consuming, here is another approach. Find Blogs out there written about your topic and post on them. A lot of blogs allow you to post on their site and there you will be able to basically put in your two cents and give them the following, HIGHLY IMPORTANT LINE ending your post which should always be in anything you write…

It may seem like a simple line but if you forget to put it in, you missed your chance to get targeted traffic to your site for free! When people are interested in what you have to say they will look at your site for more information so it is crucial that you have one HIGHLY IMPORTANT LINE in there.

2. Article writing
One of my favorite ways to get traffic and links all in once! Write articles about your site, go and submit them to just 10 different article/content exchange websites with your link/website info on the link in the article and watch the traffic come in, and the links pointing to your site go up. No joke, this method really works. The downfall would be you obviously can’t control where your articles appear and what type of websites.

3. Press Releases
Press releases have always gotten me great highly targeted traffic,. There are many PR services out there to consider, paid and free. I personally prefer the paid method (you get what you pay for) PRweb.com. They get your press release (after editors approve it there, so don’t make it a sales letter, make it and informative piece) into some great news resources to give you high traffic and highly targeted visitors.

4. Viral Marketing
Some of you may not think you know what viral marketing is, but you’ve seen it I guarantee! Think about those jokes you get in your email, that you keep passing on to your friends, or those funny You-Tube videos that you share with everyone. A lot of these are ll attempts to start viral marketing. Viral marketing is creating something that will be passed around by others causing the marketing pice (no matter how subtle) to take on a life of its own almost. You create something so funny or entertaining that people just start spreading it for you, and all the time there is a link to your website in there somewhere for people to learn more or see more at.

5. Integration Marketing
This technique is pretty much a traffic exchange that can be useful is you set yourself with a targeted site that is comparable or related to what your product or service is. Integration marketing is a hot topic and many claim it is a necessity to a successful website. I highly recommend you look at as many experts in this field as you can. The more you know, the more you can offer on your site and become more successful.

Ex. You have a newsletter on your website that people can sign up for. After signing up for your newsletter there are given the opportunity to sign up for other peoples newsletters or product information.

When you line yourself up with a website with similar client base this type of traffic exchange can be beneficial for your both. Or have other get their members to sign up for your list/newsletter or forum etc.

6. PPC advertising
Be very careful before you ever start a PPC campaign. You can literally lose all your money with these things if you aren’t highly informed on how to do this effectively. Keep you bids low to test waters and only increase them slowly to see if the results are worth the bid increase. PPC can bring you traffic, but not always that targeted traffic so you have to test this method to see if it is beneficial to your specific website.

7. Paid ads (very different then PPC)
Paid advertising allows you to determine which websites specifically will have your ads. You can make sure o approach highly relevant websites and strike a deal with them to place you advertising on their website, possibly even swap advertising, they place yours if you place theirs on your site.

8. SEO techniques
I never overlook ways to get free traffic. SEO techniques to help your site with its natural search engine rankings will always help you increase your traffic. To go into all the SEO techniques you can use here would make this the worlds longest blog post, there are lots of great resources out there to refer to to help your Serp’s… and also an idea for a future blog post for me 
